If you ask most MMA pundits and insiders whether Conor McGregor is going to box Floyd Mayweather, you’ll likely be met with a stiff ‘no’, but rumors regarding the bout continue to fire around.
Yes, in the last couple of days, speculation and talk about the rumored fight had finally died down, somewhat. After all, UFC President Dana White has shot down reports that a boxing match between Mayweather and McGregor is in the works, and recently, he and Lorenzo Fertitta met with McGregor and Nate Diaz. The consensus has been that McGregor – Diaz II could be finalized soon.
Further, in a recent interview McGregor did with ESPN, he argued Mayweather “needs him”, rather than vice versa.
“My intel is, Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather is going to happen. It changed late last week. Got a call, then somebody else sent me something yesterday and Saturday. We booked rooms in Vegas. (This happens) in September.”
“You’ve got FOX and CBS, you’ve got UFC, you’ve got boxing, you’ve got Floyd, you’ve got Conor. It’s gonna make a lot of money for people.”
Now, could it be that Diaz’s meeting with the UFC brass, which reportedly didn’t go well, is what “changed”? Maybe. Could it also be that this is all much ado about noting? Yup.
Even if, and this is a big if, the UFC is open to talks about the match-up, finalizing this bout is a whole other matter. In other words, there’s a much better chance that McGregor faces Diaz again in his next bout.
