Barboza and Melendez are set to scrap at UFC on FOX 20, which will go down on July 23rd in Chicago, Illinois. Recently the ridiculously talented striker appeared on MMA Junkie.com Radio, and while discussing the upcoming bout, Barboza stated (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“One of my training partner Eddie Alvarez, he fight with both of those guys and got the title shot,” Barboza said. “I go the same way, I hope. Get through Gilbert and for sure, if I past him I think I’m next for the title shot.”
Yes, Alvarez has been tapped to face the champ Rafael dos Anjos on July 7th, after earning consecutive wins over Melendez and Pettis. So, obviously there’s precedence there.
But, when you look around the lightweight division, Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagmedov are also in the mix. So, if Ferguson gets by Michael Chiesa on July 13th, he very well could be next for a title shot. As could Nurmagomedov, who holds a win over the RDA and has never been defeated.
First things first, however, and that’s Mr. Melendez, who is a tough out for any 155’er on the planet. Barboza isn’t looking past Melendez either, as he also noted that “El Nino” is “no joke. He comes hard every time and I’m excited for the next one. I know he’s going to come very, very hard. I’ll be ready for the big, big war.”
Yup. It should be an outstanding fight.
