Floyd Mayweather has been pushing for a boxing match with Conor McGregor recently, and according to the UFC champ, it’s because the boxing star has no other options for a big time fight.
Throughout May, there’s been a ton of talk and debate about a scrap between Mayweather and McGregor, even though, the fight almost certainly won’t happen. Although McGregor is under contract to the UFC, Mayweather has said he believes the fight could take place. He’s also said that only a bout with McGregor would pull him from retirement.
“At 27 years of age, Floyd Mayweather was on Oscar de la Hoya’s undercard. Compare that. Who doesn’t want to conquer both worlds? He’s getting old now. I have the size, I have the reach, I have the height. I have the youth. He needs me, I don’t need him. That’s the truth of it. Who else he can fight? He fights someone else in the boxing realm, all of a sudden the pay goes from $100 million to $15 million. He needs me. If he wants to talk, we can talk, but it’s me who is in control here.”
Now, many would argue that a fight between Gennady Golovkin and Mayweather would be pretty huge. But, Golovkin is a middleweight and has been destroying pretty much everyone who’s been put in front of him. So, in other words, Mayweather likely views McGregor as an easier path to $100 million…
McGregor did say, however, that he’d be willing to face Mayweather in a boxing match. Even though he would be forced to “set aside the many forms of fighting” he practices.
In any case, all this talk re: Mayweather – McGregor will likely dissipate once the latter is rebooked to fight Nate Diaz.
