When it was announced that the winner of TUF 24 will receive a shot at the UFC’s 125 title, a lot of folks assumed that would be Demetrious Johnson’s next fight. Well, the champ didn’t want to sit out until the end of 2016 for his next bout, so the UFC has booked him to scrap Wilson Reis at UFC 201.
Yes, recently the UFC announced that Johnson – Reis will co-headline the July 30th event, which will take place in Atlanta, Georgia. In the main event, welterweight champ Robbie Lawler will take on Tyron Woodley.
Reis (20-6) hasn’t been on a run that you typically see receive a title shot, as the fighter has gone 3-2 in his last 5 fights. But, since Johnson has already defeated contenders like Kyoji Horiguchi, Joseph Benavidez, Ian McCall, John Moraga, and Henry Cejudo, the UFC doesn’t have a lot of options. “Jussier” Formiga is ranked #3, but he hasn’t fought since he was handed a split decision by Cejudo.
Johnson (24-2-1), as you surely recall, stormed through Cejudo at UFC 197 last month to record his eighth title defense.
So, there you have it. Johnson will be a huge favorite to win the fight, but Reis is a rugged, well rounded fighter who hasn’t been stopped since 2011.
