Robbie Lawler’s next title defense has been booked, and as recently reported, it will be against Tyron Woodley on July 30th.
After Woodley’s bout with Johny Hendricks fell through in October, as a result of the latter’s disastrous weight cut, he was told he’d fight for the title next. But, it wasn’t until recently that word surfaced Lawler – Woodley was being targeted for UFC 201.
On Tuesday the promotion confirmed that the welterweight fight will headline the July 30th card, which will go down at the Philips Arena in Atlanta.
The bout will mark the first time Woodley has fought since back in January, 2015, when he earned a split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum. Woodley is 4-1 in his last 5 fights, and his only loss during that stretch came against Rory MacDonald.
Lawler, meanwhile, is several months removed from his epic, split decision win over Carlos Condit in January. Before that the feared striker stopped MacDonald last July. The champ has won five in a row.
