Donald Cerrone is a calls it like he sees it kind of guy, and apparently that’s led to some friction between him and teammate Jon Jones. So much so, according to “Cowboy” the two nearly threw down at the famous Jackson-Wink MMA gym.
Jones has become one of the biggest names in the game, not only because he may be the greatest fighter that ever lived, but because of his ‘off duty’ activities. Jones has had several, highly publicized run ins with the law. He’s also had some fierce exchanges with his rival Daniel Cormier, both verbal and physical, which sharply contrast with the image Jones also portrays (a mild mannered, family man).
Cerrone was recently a guest on “The Fighter and The Kid” podcast, and host Bryan Callen brought up the contrast in how Jones behaves and acts. Cerrone then proceeded to report the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I don’t give a f*ck. Jon can come and talk to me. We have plenty of disputes all the time, him and I… We almost had at it, him and I. At Jackson’s. I spoke – this is before all the wild Jon came out – and I spoke about him being wild and he was like ‘what the f*ck, you putting me out like that?’ and I was like ‘what’s up motherf*cker?’ But that’s behind the scenes.
“What happened was all the UFC cameras were there that day and I came at Jon like, ‘what’s up?’ And he comes at me and goes, ‘Cowboy’ and puts his God hat on and got to work. He just said ‘Cowboy, I just don’t understand, I’m so nice to you, all I do is try to help you and this is how you treat me, this is how you want to come at me?”
When you consider how Cerrone doesn’t hold back, and is very open publicly about his feelings and activities, it’s not surprising to hear that it’s resulted in some conflict with Jones. The latter seems to be more comfortable, more transparent in recent weeks while doing media etc, but it remains to be seen whether that will change.
Cerrone, meanwhile, will fight Patrick Cote at UFC FN 89, June 18th.
