Nearly all of the Brazilian fighters scheduled to compete tonight at UFC 198 went home with a victory, but Stipe Miocic ended the night on a sour note for fans who were in attendance at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba.
Miocic decked Fabricio Werdum with a right hook at the 2:47 mark of the opening round, which KO’d the heavyweight and ended his first title defense in devastating fashion. The bout marked the first time Werdum had fought since he submitted Cain Velasquez last summer to become heavyweight champion.
In the card’s co-headliner, the wrestling and top game of “Jacare” Souza proved to be too much for Vitor Belfort (as many expected would be the case). Souza took Belfort down shortly into the bout and punished the middleweight contender with strikes. Belfort did manage to work his way out at one juncture, but the fight returned to the floor, where Souza finished it off with punches from above.
The card also featured the Octagon debut of Cris “Cyborg”, who took on Leslie Smith. “Cyborg” caught Smith with a couple of booming hooks not long into the bout, and the fight was stopped shortly there after.
