After Controversial UFC 110 Ending, Stephan Bonnar and Krzysztof Soszynski Want Rematch

Posted by on Feb 22, 2010 at 12:39 pm ET13 Comments

Stephan BonnarThe first meeting between light heavyweights Stephan Bonnar and Krzysztof Soszynski, which was featured on Saturday’s UFC 110 preliminary card, ended in controversy after an accidental headbutt in the final round gashed Bonnar and forced the fight to be stopped.

While replays clearly showed a headbutt caused the cut, the fight’s referee ruled Soszynski cut Bonnar with a punch and declared him the winner by third-round TKO, rather than declaring a no contest or the judges issuing a decision based on the two completed rounds.

At the post-UFC 110 press conference, Bonnar and Soszynski both said they’d like an immediate rematch.

“I’m pissed off,” Bonnar said. “I’d love a rematch.”

“I agree with Stephan,” Soszynski added. “If the UFC wants it, and the fans want it, I think we should finish what we started.”

I believe this is the correct step, they both were putting it out there and honestly it was a hell of a fight, I hope that this does happen they both deserve a rematch…. I like their attitude about the situation..

nice i didnt see the fights this weekend but from wat i heard bonnar and krzystof put on a war. no problems wit there being a rematch the only problem is if bonnars medically suspended(which is likly if he suffered a fight ending cut) and krzystof is not does he wait for the bonnar fight.

This would be awesome!! That was a great fight with both men just putting it all out there. Best of luck to a quick recovery to Bonnar and I hope this rematch happens!

Bonnar IMO needed this win more than Soczynski, not so much in terms of job security but in terms of getting his career back on track.
I’m not necessarily saying that Bonnar was winning the fight, which I though was running about even at the time of the stoppage.
What seriously p!ssed me off was the ref’s bad call.
I used to love sports like throwball and basketball, but years and years of bad calls basically made those sports all but unwatchable to me.
Sure, MMA has its bad calls, bad decisions, and bad refs, but this one seemed pretty easy to remedy.
Hanging an undeserved loss on Bonnar and handing Soczynski an unearned win sits about as well with me as getting an eyeful of sand when I go get my mail in the morning, so y’know.
I would also like to see this changed to a NC, but I don’t see that happening unfortunately.

The good news here is that all involved and concerned want to get this sorted out, and acknowledge this was bullsh!t, and it sounds like a rematch will be signed in the near-future…

Bonnar got handled. Headbutt or not, I think the American Psycho hit his peak with the Forrest Griffin fight. His boxing needs work. His face shouldn’t look like a bloody mess after every one of his fights.

I for one say give us Jardine vs. Bonnar

I think releasing Jardine would be a mistake, not many light heavyweights can beat Rampage, Thiago Silva, or Bader

But he did beat Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, Brandon Vera

    3 Headliners

Those 3 still work for the company and they couldn’t beat Rampage, Silva, or Bader either, yes i know forrest won a fake decision over Rampage

Bonnar didn’t beat Jardine the first time, so I say let them fight again and release the loser.

    I was there
Krzysztof Soszynski was winning the fight but Bonnar did get headbutt
Soszynski was going to win any way

Dana White will not release Bonnar. He has stated this numerous times before. That was a great fight and should have been on the main card. I hope they fight again soon (Probably Vancouver at UFC 115 since Kristof is from Western Canada). I don’t think Jardine will be released either. Not for a while anyway.

You can not judge a fight by stats, you think of losing a title by decision, you better lose it badly, and by badly, I mean BADLY, I was at that fight, I think Rampage either won or it was a tie because of the 10-8 round by Forrest in the second round, if you don’t believe me, Forrest is a huge fan fave and they were booing him throughout the whole interview after the fight and several people were pissed walking out, you can’t lose a title by getting kicked in the legs, I understand they hurt, but Rampage had much cleaner landing strikes and knocked him down in the first round and nearly knocked him out.

Maybe he won in the stats but so did the Vikes over the Saints a few weeks ago……..

To be fair, watching a fight live is sometimes not actually the best view of a fight.

No, you can’t judge a fight on stats alone, but they aren’t completely meaningless either. Stats in a fight are different from stats in a football game, in a football game the only stat that matters at the end is the score, in a fight that goes to a decision, the stats absolutely do matter, they are what generally tells the story of a fight.

    True,

but yes it was a good fight they put it all on the line
you cant ask for more than that.
it would be good to see a rematch
