Depending on what you’ve been up today, you have may had someone tell you that Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather are going to throw down this summer…If you immediately scoffed or yelled ‘as if’, upon hearing that, well, good on you.
Yes, following a story from the British outlet, The Sun, which reported that McGregor – Mayweather is on the verge of beingSports signed, Dana White has promptly shot the claim down. In a follow up report with Yahoo Sports, the UFC President stated:
“It’s not true; it’s just a tabloid story,” White said. “And as far as I knew, Floyd is retired and he’s been on a world-wide vacation and hasn’t even been thinking of fighting.”
What a shocker…Not only would the UFC have to grant McGregor permission to compete elsewhere, they certainly would want to be cut in on the deal. Further, the report says that Mayweather was cleared to make over $100 million for the fight, and that McGregor would make around $10 million. Would the UFC’s featherweight champ agree to such a discrepancy? No.
The report does come at a time when it’s being widely speculated that Mayweather is set to come out of retirement. It also comes at a juncture when McGregor isn’t booked for a fight, following his well documented fallout with the UFC, over the media obligations for UFC 200. The star’s rematch with Nate Diaz was pulled from the July 9th card. Diaz submitted McGregor in March, and the latter is reportedly obsessed with avenging the loss.
Onto the next, over the top rumor shall we?
