Both Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski have reported that they aren’t friends, as the teammates prepare to fight at UFC FN 87, and clearly they haven’t spent much time together in the ring or cage either.
Yes, leading up to this Sunday’s bout, there’s been a lot of talk about the fact that both heavyweights train out of Jackson – Wink MMA. After all, there’s been plenty of drama in the past regarding even the prospect of two teammates fighting. Case in point, Jon Jones and Rashad Evans (who also, interestingly enough, were teammates under the Jackson – Wink MMA banner).
Overeem has downplayed the whole teammate angle as UFC FN 87 approaches, as has Arlovski, except the latter has accused “The Reem” of putting their coaches in an awkward position. And in terms of the technical side of this? As far as each fighter knowing the strengths and weaknesses of one another? Since, you know, they both train at the same gym?
Well, in the latest “UFC Tonight“, Arlovski reported that this about sparring with Overeem (quote via FOX Sports press release):
“We sparred two times. The first time a couple years ago when he came to Jackson Wink and second time before his fight with JDS because Greg Jackson asked me. When I sparred with him, I noticed he has great knees, very dangerous knees elbow and feet. This is going to help me with this upcoming match against him.”
Fair enough. Now, chances are Arlovski has watched Overeem spar other fighters, and hit pads etc, so he probably has a pretty good understanding of what the latter’s capable of. It’s going to be really interesting to see how this all plays out.
UFC FN 87 will take place in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
