If you’ve always scoffed at the old saying, ‘good things come to those who wait’, well, here’s an example of where the expression rings true.
On the latest episode of “UFC Tonight”, Megan Olivi reported that the UFC is planning to have Tyron Woodley scrap welterweight champion Robbie Lawler on July 30th. The bout will headline UFC 201, which will take place in Atlanta.
Woodley (15-3) has been campaigning hard for a title shot for months, after he was told in October that he’d receive one. The Strikeforce vet was scheduled to fight former champ Johny Hendricks that month in a title shot eliminator, but the latter withdrew from the bout after incurring weight cutting issues. Woodley’s last bout took place in January, 2015, when he earned a split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum.
Lawler (27-10), on the other hand, is coming off a razor thin, split decision win over Carlos Condit in January. For a while, there was talk of an immediate rematch, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.
Now it will be interesting to see what’s next for Condit. The veteran talked openly about the fact that he wasn’t sure if he’d keep fighting, if a rematch with Lawler didn’t materialize.
