Stephen Thompson is booked to face his buddy and former training partner on June 18th, and “Wonderboy” understandably has mixed feelings about that fact.
At the upcoming, UFC Fight Night 89 card, Thompson will throw down with Rory MacDonald. Since Thompson spent a lot of time training at Tristar in the past, MacDonald’s home gym, the fighters are friends.
But, since both men are top five ranked welterweights, in fact MacDonald is #1 and Thompson is #2, they’ve been tapped to fight. Recently Thompson was interviewed by MMA Junkie.com, and here’s what the ridiculously talented striker had to say about fighting his pal:
“He’s a very nice dude,” Thompson said. “We’ve known each other for a very long time – back in the days when I was going to Tristar and training with Georges St-Pierre before I even started MMA, actually. So we have a good, friendly relationship. Of course, the day I find out I was fighting him, it just put a smile on my face.
“We’re good friends, and come June 18, we’ll be punching each other in the face, so it’s kind of weird to be honest with you. But it’s going to be fun. It’s going to be a fun night.”
It certainly has the makings of an interesting fight, not only because of the abilities of each man, but because of what’s on the line. If Thompson wins, he’ll almost certainly advance to a title shot. With MacDonald, it’s not so clear what the future holds for him. The upcoming bout is the last on his current deal, so obviously, for negotiating purposes, he wants a win. In addition, MacDonald has already fought champion Robbie Lawler twice, and lost both times.
UFC FN 89 will be hosted by Ottawa, Ontario.
