Cris “Cyborg” Justino’s long awaited UFC debut is right around the corner, and in celebration of that fact, the promotion has posted one of her biggest wins to date.
Before the rise of Ronda Rousey, and before the UFC was even promoting female fights, the biggest name in women’s MMA was Gina Carano. Not only did Carano become a household name in the sport by going undefeated in her first 7 bouts, but “Conviction” also started receiving mainstream media attention.
Well, Strikeforce decided to match Carano up against Cris “Cyborg” in 2009, and it was a pretty, pretty big deal. The bout did huge ratings for Showtime (by the standards of the day). Carano, however, was stopped by Justino in the first round, and hasn’t fought since.
Now, over five years later, “Cyborg” will make her Octagon debut against Leslie Smith at UFC 198 on May 14th. You can watch her memorable win over Carano below.
