Rafael dos Anjos Explains Why Second Fight With Khabib Nurmagomedov Would be “Totally Different”

Rafael dos Anjos is booked to fight Eddie Alvarez on July 7th, but the UFC’s lightweight champ is still fielding questions about the last man to beat him, Mr. Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Over the last couple of years, dos Anjos has risen to the top of the MMA world, by defeating the likes of Anthony Pettis, Benson Henderson, Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone. He’s also secured the 155 title and defended it once.

While few would argue that RDA isn’t one of the most complete and dangerous fighters in the game, he still has that one asterisk tied to his reign: Nurmagomedov beat him in 2014.

Well, recently dos Anjos spoke with MMA Fighting.com, and he had this to say about his decision loss to “The Eagle”:

“I was a different fighter back then,” dos Anjos said. “I’ve done wrong things with my diet and my personal life, and I wasn’t 100 percent focused in the fight. It would be a completely different fight now. Take a look at my results and his results. It would be completely different. Two years have passed, the game has changed, and he needs better results.”

By ‘better results’, dos Anjos was referring to Nurmagomedov’s recent stoppage win over Darrell Horcher, who stepped up on short notice to face the galaxy class grappler. Nurmagomedov was originally supposed to fight fellow top contender, Tony Ferguson. RDA wasn’t impressed with the undefeated fighter’s performance…

Dos Anjos also claimed that he offered to fight Nurmagomedov in July, and that because the latter couldn’t commit to the fight, he’s not sure if “The Eagle” should get a title fight in the fall. Nurmagomedov couldn’t take a bout in July due to Ramadan.

RDA – Alvarez will headline the July 7th, Fight Night card, which will go down in Las Vegas.
