Since Jon Jones didn’t electrify audiences with his performance at UFC 197 –it’s tough being the greatest LHW of all time–there’s been plenty of debate as to why “Bones” wasn’t himself against Ovince Saint Preux.
Was it the lay off? The late change in opponent? Perhaps a bit of both? Well, according to one of Jones’ coach, all the power lifting he’s been doing played a role as well.
The UFC uses multiple cameras and microphones to produce pay-per-views (obviously…), and since Saturday’s event, MMA Junkie.com went through the recordings. Shortly after the bout ended, Jones’ longtime coach Greg Jackson, could apparently be heard saying the following to the fighter’s wrestling coach, Israel Martinez.
“Powerlifting’s a problem. He gasses. I only want to do an I-told-you-so dance right now.”
It’s worth noting that Mr. Daniel Cormier predicted that this might be the case, once Jones started reporting on social media how much weight he was pushing…Will Jones look to slim down? And lose some of the muscle? Or opt for the power advantage he’s gained?
