The UFC will reportedly be returning to Columbus, Ohio on March 1st for an event that would be the third UFC event in Ohio in under a year.
The promotion first ventured into Ohio on March 3rd, 2006 for UFC 68. The event was highlighted by Randy Couture’s successful return to the octagon where he defeated Tim Sylvia to recapture the UFC Heavyweight Championship. In less than two weeks the UFC will make its second foray into the state, hosting UFC 77 at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati on October 20th. The event’s feature attraction is a middleweight title clash between Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin.
The March 2nd event will be held in the Nationwide Arena, the same venue that hosted UFC 68 last year. With the event the better part of six months away it is impossible to predict the main event though lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight championship bouts are all possibilities given the current rumored timeline of upcoming UFC events.
At present the UFC has five rumored events between December 29th and March 3rd meaning all five UFC titles could be up for grabs in a span of just more than three months. UFC 79 will kick off the busy span for the promotion on December 29th with the lightweight and welterweight titles on the line in Las Vegas. It will be followed up with rumored events in Newcastle, England and Montreal, Canada in January. The UFC is then expected to hold an event on Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas, headlined by a heavyweight title match featuring Randy Couture. The rumored event in Columbus completes the brisk series of shows.
