For months, UFC commentator Joe Rogan has argued that Demterious Johnson, and not Jon Jones, is the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighter. Well, following Johnson’s jaw dropping, stoppage win over Henry Cejudo last night at UFC 197, Dana White is proclaiming the same thing…
Heading into UFC 197, the consensus was that Johnson’s reign as flyweight champ would continue. But, not too many people were predicting “Mighty Mouse” would take Cejudo out in the opening round. If they were, they likely weren’t saying Johnson would do so with strikes from the clinch.
Well, following Saturday’s card, White appeared on the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show. While reflecting on Johnson’s electrifying win, the UFC President stated (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“I think he’s ridiculously, incredibly talented. He’s awesome. I believe with Joe Rogan that he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.”
Yup. “Mighty Mouse” is ridiculously good. As evidenced by the fact he’s defended the flyweight title eight times…Eight times. Here’s what Rashad Evans had to say about Johnson’s performance in the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“DJ is the best. He handles everything on the fly. It’s like he’s got the cheat code. There’s not a circumstance where he doesn’t react and come up with something sinister. I thought Henry Cejudo had a chance with the cinch because of his wrestling skills. That didn’t work.”
Hopefully now more fans will start appreciating how special of a talent Johnson is, and the champ can start collecting some bigger checks. The tough thing is, however, who does Johnson have left to fight at 125?
