Jones outscored OSP for the UD win at UFC 197, and in his post-fight, Octagon interview, he surprisingly didn’t send any verbal shots Cormier’s way. But, as Jones left the Octagon, he proceeded to give the champ the finger, who was at the broadcast table, cage side.
So why did Jones flip the bird? The former champ appeared on FOX Sports 1’s post-fight show, and he had this to say about the gesture (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“It was me just being a jerk. He may have been really nice to me calling the fights. I’m not sure. I just wanted to cover my end.”
With the victory, Jones is expected to face Cormier at UFC 200, which will mark the second time they’ve fought. Jones earned a UD win over Cormier in January, 2015. “DC” was asked to comment on Jones’ performance last night, during the FS 1 show, and he said this (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release).
“He got the win. But I’m really disappointed I didn’t fight against him tonight. There’s no way that guy could beat me. I think he did the best he could. Ovince did a great job tonight. He showed Jones some things he hasn’t seen before. There will be some questions when Jon gets back home on Monday. I want nothing more than to fight Jon Jones.”
Fair enough right? Jones definitely seemed to be a bit rusty, but even at less than 100%, he was able to score a clear cut win over the always dangerous OSP. It’s going to be fascinating to see if Cormier can hand Jones his first real defeat.
UFC 197 went down at the MGM Grand Garden Areina in Las Vegas, Nevada.
