The UFC is in need of a new main event now for the July 9th, UFC 200 card, and Chael Sonnen is certain that the promotion is hoping to book Georges St-Pierre for the historic event.
Unless you decided to take a breather from electric devices on Tuesday, you’ve heard by now that Conor McGregor is no longer fighting Nate Diaz at UFC 200. Several hours after McGregor raised thousands of eyebrows by tweeting he’s elected to retire “young”, Dana White announced that the fighter is no longer part of the July 9th card. According to White, McGregor’s been pulled, because he didn’t want to leave his training in Iceland, and come do promotional appearances in Las Vegas.
Well, Chael Sonnen held a live chat yesterday on Facebook, and not surprisingly, he was asked about the stunning development. The former middleweight contender believes that all of this has likely taken place, because McGregor has attempted to renegotiate his deal. According to a follow up report from MMA Fighting.com, Sonnen argued that McGregor has made a “big mistake” trying to call the “bluff” of the UFC brass.
In addition, the former middleweight contender said this:
“Who’s a good replacement for Conor? I guarantee you Georges St.-Pierre’s phone is blowing up right now and he’s getting a big offer. That’s the guy they’re gonna go after.”
There’s no doubt that GSP – Nate Diaz would move some tickets and then some. St-Pierre’s team has been talks with the UFC, so perhaps this development will lead to an offer he can’t refuse…
UFC 200 will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
