Rose Namajunas has won three straight fights and is ranked #3 at 115, but Dana White believes “Thug” could be a couple of wins away from locking up another title shot.
Namajunas worked her way to a unanimous decision win over Tecia Torres at UFC on FOX 19, which marked her third consecutive victory, since she was outscored by Carla Esparza in 2014. That fight declared the promotion’s first strawweight champ.
“I don’t know if Rose is too excited to rush in there for a title shot again. She’s catching her stride. She looked good tonight. She seemed like she was loading up a lot and trying to knock her out with one punch instead of flowing like she did against Paige. But she’ll probably have a fight or two before a title shot.”
Since Namajunas is only 23 year’s old, there’s certainly no reason to rush her into another title fight. Plus, if you discount her TUF bouts, she’s only had 4 official UFC scraps to date. So, even if White hadn’t said what he did, it would have been pretty surprising if the UFC tapped Namajunas for another championship fight.
But, hey, you never know what can happen right? What if Claudia Gadelha gets injured before she faces Joanna Jedrzejczyk for a second time on July 8th? “Thug” could get the call…
UFC on FOX 19 took place in Tampa, Florida.
