John Dodson’s up For Rematch With TJ Dillashaw, Eager to Prove Victory Wasn’t a “Fluke”

Following John Dodson’s impressive return to 135 at UFC on FOX 19, the heavy handed fighter will likely face a top contender next, and he’s up for a rematch with TJ Dillashaw.

Dodson faced Manny Gamburyan on Saturday night, and the Jackson-Wink MMA fighter needed less than 60 seconds to finish the latter off with punches. The bout marked the first time Dodson had fought since September, when he was decisioned by reigning flyweight champ, Demetrious Johnson.

Following the bout, Dodson was asked if he’d be willing to face the former bantamweight champ Dillashaw again. “The Magician” laughed, said that “would be awesome”, and relayed (quote via MMA Junkie.com):

“Then that (expletive) can stop saying it was a fluke that I knocked his ass out,” said Dodson, while referring to his 2011 stoppage win over Dillashaw, which went down at the TUF 14 Finale.

“The guy actually held a title,” Dodson added later. “I want to show everybody that since he got the opportunity to hold the title, I could beat the guy that had it, again.”

It would be interesting to see how a rematch would play out. No question. Dillashaw has become a much better striker over the last few years, and obviously, Dodson is a better fighter now than he was five years ago too.

But, right now a rematch between Dillashaw and Raphael Assuncao probably makes more sense. The latter decisioned Dillashaw in 2013, and they’re both ranked in the top 5. So, really, booking Dillashaw – Assuncao II for a title shot eliminator might be the UFC’s go to here.
