Unless you’ve just started following all this ultimate fightin’ stuff, you know that Jones was scheduled to fight Cormier this weekend, until the champ went down with a leg injury. Now Jones is scheduled to fight Ovince Saint Preux for the interim 205 title on April 23rd.
On recent media call for UFC 197, the recent sanctioning of MMA in Jones’ home state of New York was brought up. While discussing whether he’d be interested in fighting Cormier on November 12th, at the UFC’s upcoming card in Madison Square Garden, Jones stated (quote via FOX Sports):
“I would be honored to main event against Daniel Cormier at Madison Square Garden. The question is will Daniel Cormier accept that fight?” Jones said. “You know Daniel Cormier, obviously, he’s having a lot of mental struggles when it comes to me.
“That’s just one more thing that he doesn’t need. I’m sure he doesn’t want to fight me in my backyard because he needs all the mental breaks he can get.”
What say your “DC” fans? Is the champ having “mental struggles” related to his bestest bud, Mr. Jones? Now, it should be noted that in the past, Cormier has said he’d rather not fight Jones in NYC, since the latter would be quite comfortable competing there. Fair enough right?
Cormier also relayed that since he’s wrestled in MSG, he’s not chomping at the bit to fight there like many other UFC fighters are.
All this aside, Jones has to worry about OSP for right now. Sure, Jones is a huge favorite to win, and understandably so, but no one can afford to even temporarily sleep on Saint Preux.
UFC 197 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
