Werdum and Miocic will throw down in the main event of the May 14th event, which will take place in Curitiba, Brazil. The bout will be Werdum’s first title defense, since he submitted Cain Velasquez last June to become heavyweight champ.
After dos Santos worked his way to a UD win over Ben Rothwell at UFC FN 86, the former champ was asked for his thoughts on Werdum – Miocic. Here is what “Cigano” had to say at the post-fight presser (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I think it’s going to be a good fight,” dos Santos said. “But I see a little bit of an advantage for Miocic, because Werdum doesn’t take anybody down. He just submits people when people take him down. And talking about their standup skills, Miocic is better. But a fight’s a fight. You never know.”
There you have it. Now, JDS has stated before, that he doesn’t see Werdum winning the bout if the fight stays standing. There are certainly others who believe that Miocic’s stand-up is superior to Werdum. But it’s worth noting that the champ’s used his striking to defeat fighters like Travis Browne and Mark Hunt. So, that’s saying something.
Dos Santos has been in the cage with both men. In the case of Werdum, however, it was years ago. Way before the galaxy class grappler had evolved his kickboxing to where it is today. JDS won the 2008 fight via first round stoppage. JDS fought Miocic, meanwhile, in 2014 and earned a tightly contested, decision win.
Of course, it should also be said that JDS is pretty, pretty good when it comes to the stand-up game, so if he thinks Miocic’s the better striker, maybe folks should listen? It’s going to be fascinating to see how that fight plays out.
