Chael Sonnen Not Fighting Anderson Silva at UFC 112

Chael SonnenUFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva remains without an opponent for his upcoming title defense at UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, with middleweight contender Chael Sonnen telling Yahoo Sports on Friday that he will not be fighting Silva.

Vitor Belfort, Silva’s original opponent, was forced to withdraw from the fight on Thursday after a lingering shoulder injury prompted him to undergo surgery that will sideline him for most of 2010.

Sonnen was considered the front-runner for the opening after earning the next title shot with a win over Nate Marquardt on Saturday, but cuts suffered in the victory will prevent him from making the quick turnaround. Fellow contender Demian Maia is also unlikely to fight in April due to a cut sustained in his UFC 109 win over Dan Miller.

Yoshihiro Akiyama appears to be one of the lone remaining possibilitiese, while former contenders Nate Marquardt and Yushi Okami may also be options, but are coming off losses to Sonnen.
