Recently it was announced that the winner of the 24th Season of “The Ultimate Fighter” will earn a shot at the 125 title, and clearly no one from the UFC gave Demeterious Johnson the heads up…
Earlier this week the UFC revealed that tryouts for TUF 24 will begin on April 25th, and that the show will debut on August 31st. The show will feature flyweights, and the winner of the competition will be tapped for a title shot? Kind of cool right? Or no?
Well, according to a report from Bloody Elbow.com, recently Johnson was live streaming on Twitch. While doing so, the flyweight champ was brought up to speed about the fact that the winner of TUF 24, could be someone he fights…In other words, Johnson was a wee bit surprised. Here is some of what he said in response:
“Is that true? Well look at that. That’s interesting,” Johnson said. “Oh wow. That’s crazy. That’s super weird. So the winner would face the champion. Joseph [Benavidez] should enter the contest!”
“That’s super crazy. That’s super odd. That’s kind of f–ked up for all the other guys that have been in the division for a long time. I have to read that again, that’s very odd. I’m confused a little bit, very confused.”
There you have it. Now, it’s not too shocking to see that Johnson was surprised to hear this (although it is pretty surprising that no one from ZUFFA let him know…). After all, most fighters, especially the champs, believe that competitors need to go through the usual process of working their way up, defeating contenders etc, before getting a title shot.
But, since Johnson has already defeated three of the top five ranked flyweights, and many believe he’ll defeat a fourth in Henry Cejudo on April 23rd, the UFC is running out of options. Fast.
Further, the promotion is probably hoping to generate some buzz about the 125 division, by featuring it on TUF 24.
Johnson – Cejudo will co-headline UFC 197, which will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.
