Rolles Gracie Cut by UFC After Debut Loss

Posted by on Feb 12, 2010 at 10:34 am ET14 Comments

Rolles GracieFollowing his dismal performance in a UFC debut loss to Joey Beltran on Saturday at UFC 109, heavyweight Rolles Gracie has become the latest fighter to be dropped by the UFC after losing at the event, joining Mark Coleman, Phillipe Nover, Frank Trigg, and Tim Hague.

Gracie (3-1), a member of the legendary Gracie family who entered the bout undefeated, gassed quickly while displaying lackluster striking before seemingly quitting early in the second round, giving way for Beltran to score a second-round TKO.

Many have called his debut one of the worst in UFC history and his cousin Renzo Gracie called his showing “embarrassing,” though an injury may have contributed to the loss.

I wouldnt call it the worst ever, but id did suck. It’s too bad, it was just one fight. Oh well.

Wow…you’d think a Gracie would get a second chance, esspecially if he was hurt. This might open the door to more fighters cancelling fights due to injuries. Why should a fighter risk getting cut. Sure has been plenty of fighters “calling in sick” to the octagon! Can you blame them?

  • With a name such as gracie u would have expected better especially in his UFC debuet. They promoted him pretty heavily for him to come out and flop like he did. I’m not suprised they cut him and I doubt we will see him back to be honest.

I think cutting him was the right decision, he looked terrible, and the UFC is not the place to come out looking that bad. He needs a few fights in smaller organizations and then try coming back.

I agree, let’s pretend he didn’t have the last name Gracie for a min.
If another fighter came out and looked like he did, and gassed and flopped in the way Rolles did, then they would be cut for sure.

It was the right decision, hopefully he gets over any injuries he did have, and gets a nice winning streak going in smaller orgs.

I would love to see a healthy, motovated, Rolles back in the octagon some time in the future,

Shogun’s debut may have been the worst considering all the fanfare before he came in the cage but not the point…

After his performance, there is no surprise here. If he was hurt, he needs recovery time but he looked inexpierienced. It was not exactly an UFC performance…

I have a lot of respect for the Gracie family, but I agree with Renzo, that was embarrassing, that (and excuse me) didn’t looked like an injured fighter, It looked like a walmart greeter got picked up after his shift and throw in an octagon to fight for the first time in his life.

I wanted to see that fight MORE than any other, just because I got all the hype about he being the biggest (size) Gracie, and all that, and I was MAD, I was ashamed myself, and my last name is BATISTA , not Gracie.

But, it’s like Lex said up top, it’s just ONE fight…

    Let’s See.

yeh i agree with the descision it wasnt the fact that he lost the fight it was the way he lost the fight..i dont care who u r you go out ther and u fight never give up and in my eyes hurt or not he gave up..to many fighters out ther that would die to be on that card..

  • Avatar of Eldiablo Eldiablo says:

Someone do a DNA test on this guy ’cause there’s no way a Gracie gasses like Rolles did.

  • Avatar of hendo hendo says:

yeah no suprise her Rolles disgraced the name with that bull**** dude

  • Avatar of jcohl jcohl says:

For those of you who may wonder if this was a “quick cut”, all I’ll say is that you need to see the fight before asking that question.
I was there, and Rolles embarrassed both himself and the family, and made the UFC look bad by hyping a guy so obviously not ready for prime time.
Rolles may be a Gracie by birth, but he’s got a LONG way to go before he’s an MMA fighter.
I wish the guy luck, because what I saw last Saturday night, he’s going to need it…
