Coleman Wants Couture

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 5, 2007 at 12:27 pm ET13 Comments

In an MMA News exclusive, the first ever UFC Heavyweight Champion, Mark ‘the Hammer” Coleman restates his desires to fight current UFC Heavyweight Champion, Randy ‘the Natural” Couture. Coleman has not seen any MMA action since losing to Fedor Emelianenko in a rematch back in December 2006 at PRIDE 32 – The Real Deal. Ever since, Coleman has gone back to pro wrestling in Japan where he continues to be a major draw. Coleman affirms that he truly respects Couture, and it would be an honor to fight him.

Quite frankly, I think this fight is very marketable. The Royce Gracie – Matt Hughes fight was a big draw, but I think a Coleman – Couture fight could potentially have much more drawing power if marketed properly. Imagine the headlines, “First UFC Heavyweight Champion vs. Current UFC Heavyweight Champion – ‘The Hammer takes on ‘The Natural’.”

Personally, I wouldn’t count Coleman out of this one either. Style-wise, Coleman could be a very bad match-up for Randy. We’ve seen Couture on his back before, and it’s definitely not one of his favorable positions. On the other hand, there have been very few fighters that Mark Coleman has been unable to take down. The only fighter who was successful in defending all of Coleman’s takedown attempts in recent memory was Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. Unfortunately, Coleman’s cardio can be questionable at times, a weakness that Randy Couture could definitely capitalize on. Nevertheless, I am sure hardcore MMA fans would love to see this fight. Win, lose, or draw, it would be quite something to see Coleman stepping back into the Octagon once more.

I would love to see the fight, but I don’t know how well Coleman will match up with Randy..

  • Red says:

I, too wonder how Coleman would match up with Couture. Both are very strong wrestlers, but Couture could pick Coleman apart with his stand up and dirty boxing. Coleman’s clinch game isn”t as good as Couture’s either.

Coleman is a living legend in MMA. If anyone saw Coleman’s early fights in the UFC; they would see how he would just beat people up and destroy them. This seems to be a good fight, but I don’t know if it will happen. The new MMA fans might not know Coleman and might not want to pay money to see him fight Couture. I don’t see Couture losing to Coleman. I think Couture should fight Arlovski next, if the UFC is not able to sign Fedor.

  • Harim says:

Coleman can barely fight any more, and none of the UFC’s new fans even know who he is. I think this would end up like the Hughes/Royce fight. A terrible mismatch that will do nothing for the UFC other than drain a bunch of their money to pay Coleman.

i think there would be quite alot of interest in this fight.would tough one to call but i think randy has the edge in this one.hope they can get it on!

  • MMAJosh says:

i sure hope this fight doesn’t happen…if randy wins theb he beat a washed up vet…if coleman wins then we have a champion that surely wouldn’t last any longer than one title defense against all the talent in the HW division..besides…do we really want to see coleman and his bad cardio anyways??

  • millam3 says:

I hope the UFC gets off their ass and actually signs a bunch of the top tier fighters that are STILL waiting to be signed from PrideFC. I know Coleman is not top10 type of fighter, but he is better than most of the HW the UFC has now and has more drawing ($$$$) power.

    • MMAJosh says:

No offense, but mark coleman is not “better than most of the HW the UFC has now and has more drawing ($$$$) power.” That’s simply not an educated assessment of the HW class in the UFC, nearly all the middle to top fighters would kill Coleman.

  • the truth says:

Bad idea, coleman is washed up.
If they can’t get fedor they should do something ridicilous like putting couture vs. brock lesnar.

Because nobody wants to see him fight timmy again.

  • SCOTCHYDOW says:

It would be just like when he fought Fedor (twice) Can Coleman pass a steroid test?

  • zero says:

cotoure would maul coleman, but i would love to see the fight

  • Marauder says:

Why do all these guys think they can just come into, or back to, the UFC and fight the Champ? Brock Lesnar, Coleman, Vitor wants Rampage…it’s ridiculous! Come in and prove yourself just like everyone else.

    • SCOTCHYDOW says:

Now I agree…..sort of. Rampage basicly did the same thing. Cro-Cop too(if Gonzaga hadn’t of kicked his head off) I agree they must have at least 2 fights in the UFC. A lot of these guys are already proven in other federations. I believe they need to recognize the spectrum of the “Top Ten” Which they haven’t done in a while. I believe that Lesnar will benifit greatly because his name packs seats with a whole new fan base. Sad but true. I do believe the UFC should recognize accomplishments fighters achieve elsware or in past UFC visits though.

      • Marauder says:

Very true. Now, on the other hand, guys like Dan Henderson and Fedor have every right. But the others, oh hell no. Work your way back up the ladder if you want the Gold
