Ovince Saint Preux appreciated the offer, but the light-heavyweight contender won’t be taking Daniel Cormier up in his invitation to go train at AKA…
As you’ve certainly heard by now, Cormier is no longer fighting his rival Jon Jones on April 23rd, due to a leg injury. Instead, OSP has agreed to step up and face Jones at the upcoming event. The bout will be for the interim 205 title.
Recently Cormier appeared on “The MMA Hour” to discuss his withdrawal from the highly anticipated fight. During the segment, the champ also invited OSP to come train at AKA, all expenses paid, for the remainder of his camp.
Well, Saint Preux ended up appearing on the same show, and the powerful fighter had this to say about Cormier’s offer (quote via Bloody Elbow):
“Well, actually I was listening to the show when he actually said that,” OSP said, “because he actually… I know Daniel, we talk. Every time I see him we get to talking and stuff. And my manager, they text from time to time… But, it’s just one of them situations. Like I said, from day one I’ve been here with my trainers and stuff. It’s one of them things that we talked about, I’ve been with my camp from day one and I appreciate the invitation and everything, all the hospitality. Even going back to the Strikeforce days with Bob Cook. Definitely appreciate the invitation, but I think with everything we’ve got going on over here… My coach came up with a solid game plan and I think we definitely gonna be okay.”
Ultimately it’s not surprising to hear OSP say this, and chances are Cormier didn’t realistically thinks he’d take him up on his offer. Although, I’m sure he would have followed throughif OSP did want to come out.
Not only does OSP want to stick with the coaches that have helped make him into a top ten 205’er, you never know, he could end up facing “DC” at some point. So, he may not want to give Cormier’s coaches an insider’s look at his skill set.
Can OSP pull off the big upset on April 23rd? It would be pretty, pretty crazy if he did.
UFC 197 will go down in Las Vegas, Nevada.
