Joe Lauzon Talks About What It’s Like Training With BJ Penn and Marv Marinovich

UFC lightweight and “The Ultimate Fighter 5″ contestant Joe Lauzon went out to Hawaii shortly after suffering the fifth defeat of his career against Sam Stout at UFC 108 in January. He took to his blog recently to give an update on his training in Hawaii with BJ Penn, and his trainers Marv and Gary Marinovich. He also drew comparisons to a previous stint in Hawaii shortly after “The Ultimate Fighter 5″ a few years ago.
To give a quick summary though: It’s been GREAT training. I have only been around for a couple weeks but I can see why BJ has looked so great in his last few fights. Marv and Gary Marinovich are on top of things here. Last time I was out it was a much looser training regiment but that is no longer the case. There is a lot of structure and a LOT of hard work going on around here. BJ amazes me all the time because even when I think he can’t get much better, he continues to find new ways to make big jumps in his training. I say all the time that I think BJ is the best pound for pound fighter in the world, and his continual progression is the reason he stays on top.
On top of all the great stuff I have learned to do from Marv and Gary… I have really learned a lot of things NOT to do. Apparently I am not much of an athlete… because I do pretty much every activity with the worst form they have ever seen. I have horrible flexibility and I am just a nightmare. As Marv put it though: “Imagine what you will be able to do when you become a real athlete.” I guess that just means I have a lot of room for improvement, right? I have made good improvements compared to how I started out though. I will have a LOT of time to improve on things before August rolls around anyways.

Kenflo doesn’t count?
We will get on that right away, thank you
Fixed. Sorry about that.
Dangit. I wanted to be the one who pointed that out.
KENNY FLORIAN WAS HIS 1ST DEFEAT BACK IN 2008 DUE TO ELBOWS!!!!!!!
I corrected the story already, I just forgot to correct the excerpt on the main page when I did that. It was a typo. My apologies.
so let me guess bj is gonna teach young joe son a thing or two only to have joe come gunnin for bj in the future. its happened before right. bj is turning into sensai penn of the lightweights. dont ever disrespect your sensai. right kenny.
BOW TO YOUR SENSAI!
Maybe BJ thinks for anyone to stand a chance, he will have to help them out a bit. He doesnt seem the type of guy to duck a fight with a former student and he seems very eager to take on the toughest guy he can find.
I look forward to Joe’s next fight. I am interested to see how he has changed.
