NY State Assembly Votes Yes to Legalize Pro MMA

If you live in New York State or have always wanted to see a UFC card go down at Madison Square Garden, well, there’s a huge reason to smile today…

According to multiple reports, the New York State Assembly have voted yes, by a 113 to 25 margin, to lift the ban on pro MMA. How about that?

Now the state’s governor, Andrew M. Cuomo, will need to sign the bill as well. Since he’s been in favor of pro MMA in the state, however, that’s expected to be a formality. Once that happens, the New York State Athletic Commission will have 120 days to set up guidelines and rules for the sport.

So, while the UFC won’t be heading to MSG two weeks from now or anything, this is huge news. MMA has been banned in NY State since 1997…
