Back when Ronda Rousey was the UFC’s reigning champion, there was a ton of talk about her facing “Cyborg”. But, since Justino competes at 145, the UFC and Rousey repeatedly said the bout wasn’t going to happen, unless the Invicta FC champ dropped down to 135. Tate, however, said she would be willing to meet Justino in a catch-weight fight.
Well, since then, Rousey has lost the belt, Tate took the title from Holly Holm, and “Cyborg” has apparently abandoned moving to 135. But, recently at a fan Q&A, Tate was asked again if she’s still willing to fight Justino. “Cupcake” said this (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I’ve been hearing [the rumors] for such a long time, I just don’t really know, I haven’t had that confirmed. But I am open to that fight,” Tate said, while referring to recent reports that the UFC is looking at bringing in Justino for UFC 198. “Maybe doing it at a catchweight at 140. You know, I have nothing but respect for ‘Cyborg.’ She freaking eats girls for breakfast. She’s amazing. And it’s like, what do I have to lose in that fight? I go out there and give it everything I have, and if I’m able to take out Goliath, then I am. Yeah, I would love to step in there with someone of her caliber.”
You have to hand it to Tate for being interested in that fight, as “Cyborg” is one of the top fighters in all of women’s MMA. That said, so is Ms. Tate.
Now would the UFC consider booking this? Not likely.
When Rousey was the champion, Dana White and UFC brass repeatedly said “Cyborg” would need to move to 135, and that they weren’t interested in catch-weight bouts. So, it’s hard to imagine them walking back on that stance now. At least, as far as a bout with Tate’s concerned. Then again, there was a time when the UFC wouldn’t let a reigning champ move up and challenge for another division’s title…
Justino is coming off a first round, KO win over Daria Ibragimova in January at Invicta FC 15.
