Not only did Diaz submit superstar Conor McGregor at UFC 196 earlier this month, it was revealed afterwards, that he was paid $500,000 for the bout. That doesn’t include Diaz’s take of the pay-per-view buys, which Dana White has claimed, reached 1.5 million.
If you’ve followed Diaz over the years, then you know it wasn’t long ago when he was sitting on the sidelines, over a contract dispute with the UFC. Diaz finally decided to return to the cage, but when he decisioned Michael Johnson in December, his take was just $40,000.
Well, recently MacDonald appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while discussing Diaz’s recent, big payday, the ‘Red King”stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“That’s awesome. I’m super happy for him, man,” MacDonald said. “I hope everybody gets paid like that, especially guys who’ve been around for so long. I’ve seen a couple of his fight numbers after, and I was absolutely pissed. I was like, how is a guy like this making that money, you know?
“I feel the same way about my fights too. Sometimes I look at the numbers, I’m like, what the f**k, man? How am I getting paid that…”
Yup. Rory wasn’t the only one. Now sure, there will be some, who will argue that Diaz was coming off losses to Josh Thomson and Benson Henderson when he was just making $20,000 to show. But, he was fighting Thomson and Henderson…This is a guy who had defeated Jim Miller, Donald Cerrone, and Takanori Gomi, and has long had a sizeable fanbase. So, it’s no wonder other fighters were questioning Diaz’s pay.
All that aside, it looks like Diaz is going to have a very lucrative, 2016 campaign.
MacDonald, meanwhile, is scheduled to fight fellow welterweight contender Stephen Thompson on June 18th.
