UFC 109 Bonuses: Sonnen, Marquardt, Thiago, and Serra Earn $60K Awards
Chael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt, Paulo Thiago, and Matt Serra each earned $60,000 “fight night” bonuses for their performances on Saturday at “UFC 109: Relentless” in Las Vegas, UFC President Dana White announced at the UFC 109 post-fight press conference.
Sonnen and Marquardt squared off for the next middleweight title shot and their bout didn’t disappoint, as the co-headliners took home “Fight of the Night” honors. While Sonnen pummeled Marquardt on the ground for most of the fight, Marquardt kept things interesting by cutting Sonnen open with an elbow from the bottom before desparately working for a finish in a frantic final minute, but Sonnen would ultimately survive to earn a unanimous decision win.
Thiago earned the “Submission of the Night” after dropping Mike Swick with a counter left in the second-round, quickly securing a D’arce choke that, after Swick refused to tap, put him to sleep.
In the pay-per-view opener, Serra scored the “Knockout of the Night” over fellow-veteran Frank Trigg, dropping “Twinkle Toes” with a right before finishing him with several more powerful punches on the ground.

Yes!!!!! Trigg got Knocked The F out! This guy is a F’n aHole the 2 times I have met him in person.
Personally, I thought Marquardt was going to pummel Sonnen. But MAJOR props to Chael, those were some sick take downs.
PS: Coleman flat out looked like he was 80. His legs looked like they were going to break from under him. I felt bad for the guy. Congrats to Couture.
I think those were all deserving recipients.
I thought Coleman looked bad bot not as horrible as the Shogun II fight. People, remember that he just fought Couture. Couture makes most people look older than him. Coleman looked good for a minute or so but took some hard punches that pretty much became the beginning of the end for that fight.
Ruff night for Greg Jacksons team… Nate, Stan, Guillard {who IMO} lost
guillard won and greg jackson was supposedly really proud of his performance.
i wonder what tito said lol coleman needs to quit.
I thought at the end of the paperview they announced that Randy got submission of the night. Personaly i thought Thiago should get it for the better submission. But i figured Randy had the bigger name thats why they gave it to him. I guess they changed there minds.
I think Randy’s submission was Joe Rogan’s choice for Submission of the Night.
Mine too…
;)
It was good, but it had nothing on Thiago’s Darce choke. That was poetry in unconscious stillness.
I was real impressed with Paulo Thiago, his standup looked a lot crisper than what i saw when he first entered the ufc against Kos. Although i think it may be a case where swick was a little overrated imo. nonetheless paulo looked great. I would personally love to see him fight Nate at 170 or even Amir or the Stun Gun.
Randy was great, as expected. Nate should go to bj Penns camp to work on takedown defense. Sonnen was good. I like Coleman, wish he could have made it to a decision. He looked like a broken man at the end. Tito is a punk. Talking trash to a man that just lost is classless but on par for Tito. Tiago looked like a title contender, when will he get his shot.
I second your tito comment.I know there’s no fighter bashing here. But there should be an exception for certain classless, loud mouth, disrespectfull punks. But i won’t mention any names.
Even though I tend to agree with you on this fighter who shall remain nameless but whose initials are Tito Ortiz, we don’t make exceptions.
I can’t express enough how impressed i was with sonnen.I like both those guys, but i really thought marquardt would expose chael for what i thought he was,a good fighter with alot of heart, sloopy sub deffense but a good win for anyone moving up the latter.I couldn’t of been more wrong.I was pulling for nate only because i thought he had a way better chance at silva but i’m not disappointed at the outcome at all.and i’ll be very exited to watch that fight take place.
