UFC on FOX 19: Glover Teixeira Tapped to Fight Rashad Evans After “Shogun” Rua Withdraws

UFC on FOX 19 will no longer feature a bout between two former, light-heavyweight champs, but it will include a pivotal bout at 205 nonetheless.

On Wednesday, the UFC confirmed that “Shogun” Rua has pulled out of his April 16th fight with Rashad Evans due to injury. The nature of Rua’s injury wasn’t reported.

Stepping in for Rua will be fellow contender Glover Teixeira. The noted finisher is coming off a stoppage win over Patricks Cummins, and a choke out victory over Ovince Saint Preux. Prior to that Teixeira dropped consecutive decisions to Phil Davis and Jon Jones.

Evans returned to the cage for the first time in nearly two years last October, and lost via decision to Ryan Bader. The former champ was coming off not one, but two serious knee injuries.

So, while “Shogun” fans are likely disappointed with this news, Evans – Teixeira is a nice replacement.

UFC on FOX 19 will take place in Tampa, Florida.
