Heading into UFC 196, there was a ton of talk that McGregor could be tapped to fight Lawler in July, provided he won. Originally, McGregor was supposed to fight RDA at the event, but after the latter broke his foot, Nate Diaz was brought in.
The fight took place at 170, adding further fuel to the speculation fire that McGregor could be headed for a showdown with Lawler. But, as you know, Mr. Diaz and his rear-naked-choke had other ideas.
Well, following Saturday’s event, RDA appeared on “The MMA Hour”. While discussing what’s next for him, the lightweight champ tossed out this possibilitiy (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I don’t know the UFC’s plans, but I’m here, man,” dos Anjos said. “I’m here to fight anybody. I’ll fight welterweight too, if they need.”
“I respect Robbie Lawler, but if UFC needs somebody to fight for the welterweight (title), I would fight.”
How about that? LW champ vs. WW champ? Sounds nice no? But could it happen?
While hardcore fans and pundits would love to see that fight, RDA is not McGregor. In other words, it’s pretty clear that the UFC was willing to grant McGregor pretty much anything he asked for, because of all the buzz that was tied to him. From an abilities perspective, RDA should have that much hype, but he doesn’t.
So, one would think the UFC will look at Lawler – Nate Diaz, or a rematch with Carlos Condit. RDA will likely be tapped to fight a lightweight contender.
