Fabricio Werdum’s first title defense will go down in a soccer stadium. On Friday, the UFC announced that the heavyweight champ will face Stipe Miocic on May 14th at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil.
UFC 198 is the same card that will feature a middleweight contender bout between Vitor Belfort and “Jacare” Souza.
The Arena da Baixada reportedly holds over 40,000 people, and when you consider Werdum, Belfort and Souza are all fighting, chances are they’re going to fill it. Brazil’s Demian Maia is also scheduled to fight Matt Brown at the event, and the nation’s Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will face Patrick Cummins.
Werdum was supposed to defend his belt for the first time last month against Cain Velasquez. The former champ injured his back, however, and Miocic was tapped as a replacement. Then Werdum announced he was also injured and the fight was cancelled.
Many bouts have been booked for UFC 198 already, but until now, the venue had yet to be announced.
