Cody Garbrandt didn’t face former flyweight contender John Lineker at UFC Fight Night 83 as scheduled, but the bantamweight says the win he scored was a very important one nonetheless.
Garbrandt was scheduled to face Lineker on Sunday night, but then last week, the latter withdrew due to illness. Augusto Mendes agreed to step in on very short notice. Mendes has been on a lot of folk’s radars, due his galaxy class grappling skills, but few expected him to defeat Garbrandt.
At the post-fight press conference, here’s some of what Garbrandt had to say about the win, and everything that unfolded leading up to it (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I was on weight, so I had to gain weight,” Garbrandt said. “I was trying to get as high as I could. I was supposed to be a 140-pound catchweight bout, and then it went up to 141 and 142. It didn’t matter to me.
“Anything I learned this week was a test, from Lineker pulling out on Monday and finding a new replacement the same day, then finding out it was going to be a catchweight. So I grew mentally in this fight.”
Fair enough. Garbrandt also reported afterwards that UFC officials have told him he’ll fight Lineker next, when he’s fully recovered. Sounds like a plan.
