Sage Northcutt’s undefeated run came to a screeching halt at UFC on FOX 18 on Saturday, but according to the highly touted prospect, he was suffering from strep throat.
Northcutt took on Bryan Barberna at the event, and while he landed some heavy shots early on, the rugged vet mounted a comeback. In round two, Barberena tapped Northcutt with an arm-triangle-choke from halfguard, which surprised more than a few folks (but not Mr. Barberena).
The 19 year-old appeared on the latest “MMA Hour” on Monday, and while doing so, reported the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“Two days before my fight, I had a real bad relapse of the strep throat and I had to go to the emergency ready clinic,” Northcutt said. “The UFC had to take me, then [a doctor] with the UFC had to write a prescription for more antibiotics, stuff like that. So I really couldn’t explain how I felt out there. I felt really horrible.”
Northcutt went on to say that his tapout came easier because he couldn’t breathe due to being so congested. He also claimed he did not panic, as some of have theorized. Let the debate begin.
