Tarec Saffiedine introduced himself to brand new MMA fans last night at UFC on FOX 18 in pretty impressive fashion, by working his way to a UD win over Jake Ellenberger. The welterweight didn’t bomb out Ellenberger or anything, but he did showcase the vaunted kicking game that helped him become Strikeforce champ.
What also made the win memorable was that it marked the first time since October, 2014 that the the Belgian fighter had competed. Thus, this is one of the reasons why Saffiedine said this following last night’s UFC on FOX 18 win (quote via UFC press release):
“It’s good to be back after a year off. He was a tough opponent and I couldn’t be happier right now. He got me, but I was able to recover really good. It was a quick moment, but I was able to come back.”“I didn’t feel too much ring rust. I train hard. I was basically sleeping, eating and training in the gym. I had to get mentally stronger, it was tough.”
Now it will be interesting to see what comes next for Saffiedine. The only men who have defeated him since 2009 are contenders Rory MacDonald and Tyron Woodley.
