Joey Villasenor Signs With Strikeforce, Returns in March

Middleweight Joey Villasenor, a PRIDE and EliteXC veteran, has signed a four-fight deal with Strikeforce and will return to action in March, the fighter recently announced.

Villasenor (27-6) lost to Murilo “Ninja” Rua for EliteXC’s 185-pound title in mid-2007, but has bounced back to win four-straight, including victories over Ryan Jensen and Phil Baroni as well as a split decision over Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos in his most-recent fight last June.

Strikeforce’s only event currently slated for March is a Showtime-televised Strikeforce Challengers event on March 26 in Fresno, California.

Nice pick up for the ‘force, and can only help their slim roster…

    • ufcmanz says:

Hey your right Jcohl everything helps
      Anyone hear any words about
      Ninja Rua
      Akihiro Gono
      Denis Kang
      Paulo Filho
      Kevin Randleman
      Pedro Rizzo
      Jeff Monson
It’d be nice if SF could add a few of these names

      • RussoC13 says:

rua is already with strikeforce and i think kang is going to sign with strikeforce soon

the other guys fight in smaller promotions like dream and sengoku.. which alot of those guys from dream and sengoku have been promoted to the states so we might see gono and filho move to strikeforce

      • Josh Smith says:

i heard monson is gonna fight travis fulton soon hope it happens

      • jcohl says:

@ josh smith – fighting Travis Fulton is like a red flag that your MMA career is in a tailspin, and I don’t think Monson is in those dire straits quite yet, but hey you never know…

      • Justin says:

Actually, I think there was a rumor at one point in time that Fulton and Monson would square off, but that card got cancelled altogether, and Monson was scheduled to fight in Brazil the same night (which got cancelled because of Monson’s pending legal issues).

      • Josh Smith says:

@jcohl it was just a rumor i heard and im a huge fan of monson and fulton so i wouldve loved to see it happen

  • gsueagle says:

This is a great signing by Strikeforce. I am glad that they kept him in Strikeforce. I would love to see the fight btween Villasenor and Robbie Lawler since we didn’t get to see it the first time because of the EliteXC debacle.
