Urijah Faber Says UFC Brass Aren’t “Dummies”, Rubber Match With Dominick Cruz Has Been “Building For a Long Time”

Urijah Faber

TJ Dillashaw and plenty of fans want to see the UFC book an immediate rematch with Dominick Cruz, but not surprisingly, Urijah Faber is already campaigning for a third scrap with the new champ.

Cruz worked his way to a split decision win over Dillashaw at UFC Fight Night 81, and in doing so, completed one of the greatest comeback stories in MMA history. Since the fight was so competitive, and entertaining, however, there have been calls for the UFC to schedule a rematch.

The other option, of course, is to have Cruz fight Faber for a third time. The latter submitted him way back in 2007, before Cruz won the rematch in 2011. A third fight was scheduled for 2012, but Cruz was unable to compete due to the well documented issues with his knee.

Well, following UFC FN 81, Faber reported to MMA Junkie that he and Cruz not only talk trash through the media, they’ve in fact, done so via their phones…How about that? Faber also had this to say, while discussing whether the UFC will come calling for Cruz – Faber III:

“I haven’t heard one guarantee,” Faber said. “But they’re not dummies. There’s one guy who has beat Cruz, and we had a knockdown drag-out the second time. I put him on his butt on multiple occasions. It’s something we’ve been building up for a long time.”

It will be interesting to see what the UFC decides to do here. While a lot of people would like to see Faber take another run at Cruz, is there more buzz for an immediate rematch with Dillashaw? There certainly appears to be more talk tied to Dillashaw – Faber, but chances are, that fight’s not coming next. Unless, however, Cruz needs some time off. Then perhaps the winner of Dillashaw – Faber could lock up a title shot?
