Conor McGregor may have taken out one of the greatest fighters in UFC history last time out, but the coach of his next opponent, Rafael dos Anjos, believes “Notorious” is in for a rough night, March 5th.
Although the bout hasn’t been officially announced, or signed, the MMA world is buzzing about the news that McGregor is expected to fight RDA at UFC 197. Since the fight will match the featherweight champion up against the lightweight champ in dos Anjos, it’s a pretty big deal. The fact McGregor is one of the biggest names in combat sports doesn’t hurt either.
Recently RDA’s head coach, the renowned Rafael Cordeiro, spoke to Sherdog.com about the planned fight. While doing so, here is some of what he had to say:
“It’s a fighter that we truly believe we can beat,” Cordeiro said. “He’s coming from a lower division, and he can be sure that he’ll face a strong champion who will not change his style. McGregor has already proven to be a great athlete, but we have five rounds to beat him and Rafael is coming in hungry to beat him, not only physically but spiritually, and to break his soul inside the Octagon. I bet Rafael will finish him in a brutal way, the same way he has finished his last fights.”
So, by the sounds of it, just because McGregor made Jose Aldo pay for his aggression at UFC 194, RDA won’t be sitting back. Sure, perhaps Cordeiro is just saying this and has started up the mental warfare already, but dos Anjos is one of the best pressuring fighters in MMA. So, it would be surprising if this changed against McGregor. Especially since dos Anjos has punishing strikes and a top game that no fighter wants to experience.
But, McGregor is extremely explosive and has that booming left hand that can end a fight instantly. It’s going to be fascinating to see what goes down.
UFC 197 is expected to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Holly Holm vs. Miesha Tate is also planned for the event.
