The two fought at UFC 194 on December 12th, and Romero won the tightly contested bout via decision, and in doing so, may have locked up a title shot. The powerful wrestler hurt Souza early on, but was unable to finish the fight, and the latter launched a comeback. So much so, one of the judge’s awarded the fight to Souza.
Well, recently “UFC Tonight’s” Ariel Helwani spoke with Souza’s manager, Gilberto Faria, and he had this to say in a statement (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“We still have not digested the judges’ decision,” Faria said. “Romero played dirty. If you look at the footage, he held the fence twice to avoid the takedown sequence in the second round and poked Jacare’s eyes in the third.”
How about that? Now is any of this enough to persuade the UFC to book a rematch? Probably not, as if they did, who would fight the new champ Luke Rockhold next? Vitor Belfort? Then again, since Romero didn’t score a clear cut win, the UFC might be hesitant to grant him a title shot, if there’s not enough hype for the fight.
Faria also reported that if Souza can’t face Romero next, then he’s interested in taking on the former champ Chris Weidman. That’s a fight that a lot of people would like to see and it’s one that makes sense no?
The loss to Yomero snapped “Jacare’s” eight fight winning streak and marked the first since 2011 that he was defeated. The man who did that was Luke Rockhold.
