Renato “Babalu” Sobral Signs With Strikeforce
Renato “Babalu” Sobral has signed a contract to fight for Strikeforce, the promotion announced during last nights broadcast of an event from the Playboy Mansion. Sobral was released from the UFC in August after defeating David Heath at UFC 74. In the win he held onto a fight-ending choke for several additional seconds after Heath had tapped out and the referee called for the fight to be stopped and the choke to be released. Last week a $25,000 fine was issued by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the incident.
No specifics were given as to when “Babalu” might make his debut for the organization though the signing will immediately bring more attention to the organization, providing them another notable fighter on their roster that already includes top-ranked lightweight fighter Gilbert Melendez.
In his time with the UFC Sobral went 6-4. During his most-recent stint with the organization he earned victories over Travis Wiuff, Chael Sonnen, and Mike Van Arsdale before back-to-back losses to Chuck Liddell and Jason Lambert. He bounced back from the losses with the win over Heath in August.

Good for Babalu. Hopefully he can put together a string of wins and maybe we will see him back in the UFC.
Good Luck Babalu. Hopefully you get your personal problems worked out and come back to the UFC soon.
He is too good of a fighter to not have in the UFC. He will be back. I feel bad for his next opponent…whoever it may be.
It said that Babalu held the choke for “several additional seconds after Heath had tapped out”,but he held for about just 2.5 to 3 seconds after Heath tapped .
In my book “several” means 3-4 which I think is about right though it did fall on the short end of that scale in my opinion.
Hey Kris…. have you heard any word on the new UFC game thats coming out. They showed the preview a while ago and havent updated any info. Do you have any word on that?
As far as I know the game is coming out next year sometime but I haven’t heard much in terms of a firm release date but thanks for the reminder, I’ll look into it and (hopefully) post an update as soon as I get some more firm info.
I think this is the right move for Babalu as in my opinion he was past his prime in the UFC after losing a couple of high profile fights, this move still keeps him in the public eye and also gives strikeforce added publicity.
I dont think he was past his prime…I just think he had a bad few fights. He is only what….32 years old? I think that is the prime for a lot of fighters. He could just start hurting people. You put Babalu up against Chuck again….I question that Chuck could beat him.
Within the Light heavy weight division there are a lot of strong contenders for the title and in my opinion against one of the big guns Babalu would struggle……..Houston Alexander for instance, a guy who is 2 fights in with devastating striking abilities Babalu would not be able to cope. I do agree against Chuck it would definitely be a closer fight but the fight will never happen………
