It remains to be seen how long Robbie Lawler’s reign as the UFC’s welterweight champion will last, but one thing’s for certain, it’s been ridiculously fun watching it all unfold.
Lawler squeaked by Carlos Condit at UFC 195 on Saturday with the split decision win, and in doing so, he recorded his second title defense. Not only was the bout very competitive, it was also extremely entertaining, so much so, some are saying it was one of the best fighters ever in the UFC.
Now sure, Lawler may not be viewed as the UFC’s most dominant champ currently, but fans love to watch him fight and for good reason. Following Saturday’s epic battle, Dana White was asked to weigh-in on Lawler’s performance, and the UFC President relayed this (quote via UFC.com):
“[Lawler]’s our Evander Holyfield man, right?” White said while referring the boxing great. “It’s just like he’s never in a boring fight. He’s always, when he gets hurt he continues to go toe-to-toe. Robbie reminds me…he’s our Evander Holyfield. He really is.“And I respect so much when, you’re in a fight like this and you have to come out, you have to come out in that fifth round and do what Robbie did. And he did it. Great fight.”
It was the amazing fight that everyone was predicting, and a big part of that is thanks to Lawler and what he brings to the table. A relentless approach, fearsome strikes and a ton of heart.
Everything worked out well from the UFC’s perspective. Most fans were on board when the bout was announced, but there were some who questioned whether Condit should be tapped for a title fight over Johny Hendricks. Kind of seems like ancient history now.
