When Stipe Miocic made his way to the UFC in 2011 he was widely touted as a top heavyweight prospect, and clearly all the pundits who hyped him were on the mark.
Sine his UFC arrival, Miocic has continued to climb the heavyweight ranks and currently sits in the #3 spot. If not for a stoppage loss to Stefan Struve back in 2012, or a tightly contested, decision defeat to Junior dos Santos last December, the 33 year-old likely would have already challenged for the title.
Well, tomorrow night at UFC 195, Miocic will throw down with the #2 ranked Andrei Arlovski. If Miocic defeats the former champ, it’s pretty hard to imagine that Miocic wouldn’t get tapped for a title shot next.
So, who would Miocic rather fight? The reigning king in Fabricio Werdum? Or the former champ Mr. Cain Velasquez? Recently Miocic was asked this very question by UFC.com, and he stated this:
“I wouldn’t care,” Miocic said. “I think I match up well with both of them.”
Now sure, usually a fighter won’t outright say who they’d rather fight, unless there’s a beef or they’ve lost to one of them before. It’s an interesting question. On one hand, Velasquez has great wrestling and might be able to put Miocic on his back. But, Werdum likely has a more diverse striking game than Velasquez and no one wants to play in “Vai Cavalo’s” guard.
All this aside, Miocic has to get by Arlovski first. While talking about the latter, Miocic noted:
“He (Arlovski) is a tough guy and a former champ. He’s fought the best in the world and he’s gonna come in and be ready to fight, just like me. So I’m super excited. A lot of fireworks are gonna happen, and we’re going to put on a great show.”
It certainly has the potential to be a great fight. UFC 195 will go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
