Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk has been forced to withdraw from his matchup with Clay Guida scheduled for “UFC on Versus 1: Vera vs. Jones” for undisclosed reasons, and Shannon Gugerty has been tapped to replace Sherk and fight Guida at the March 21 event in Broomfield, Colorado, according to MMAjunkie.
Sherk (33-4-1) hasn’t fought since losing to Frankie Edgar last May, pulling out of an October bout with Gleison Tibau with a shoulder injury as well as a January fight against Jim Miller due to a cut.
Gugerty (12-4) has alternated wins and losses since debuting in the UFC in mid-2008, earning victories over Dale Hartt and Matt Grice, while dropping fights to Spencer Fisher and most-recently in November Terry Etim.
Guida (25-11) emerged as a lightweight contender with three-straight wins from 2008 to 2009, including a victory over Nate Diaz, but has since dropped back-to-back fights to top 155-pounders Kenny Florian and Diago Sanchez.
UFC on Versus 1 is headlined by Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones and also features Junior dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga and Anthony Johnson vs. John Howard.
