For weeks now, McGregor’s been talking about moving up to lightweight, and after he took out Jose Aldo, Dana White confirmed a title shot at 155 would be waiting. But, the belief has been that the UFC was looking more so at Donald Cerrone vs. McGregor, rather than a fight with dos Anjos. The reason being that Frankie Edgar is waiting for his crack at the belt, and there’s no doubt that the former lightweight champ is also a big draw.
Well, following RDA’s emphatic win over Cerrone on Saturday, he was predictably asked about McGregor any ways (he did call for a bout with the featherweight champ in his post-fight, Octagon interview). Here is some of what RDA had to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“Yeah, since I won the fight against Pettis [at UFC 185], I had my MCL injury and it took me maybe four months to get better,” he said. “And finally here I am defending my belt, and I didn’t have any injuries. I’m looking forward to coming back as soon as possible. Conor McGregor has said he wants to come to my division, and I think it will not be a smart decision for him. But if he wants to come I have to overcome him.”
It certainly would be fascinating to see how McGregor would do against dos Anjos. The lightweight champ is a southpaw, has heavy hands, vicious kicks, and a nasty, nasty top game. He’s also a former welterweight.
But, if you’re a betting man and or woman, you might want to a put a few bucks down on McGregor – Edgar going next, and say, RDA vs. Tony Ferguson?
