Ryo Chonan Moving Down to Welterweight

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Sep 28, 2007 at 9:55 am ET4 Comments

As most of you are aware, Ryo Chonan has signed with the UFC. However those hoping to see Chonan attempt another flying scissor heel hook on Anderson Silva will just simply have to wait.

Sherdog is reporting that Chonan will be moving down to the 170 lb weight division. Chonan is expected to make his UFC debut on November 17, at UFC 78 in Newark, New Jersey, as he takes on ATT’s Thiago Alves. It’s the “Piranha” vs. the “Pitbull”.

Though no main event has been confirmed for the event the card is starting to take shape. You can check out rumors for all the upcoming UFC events in the MMAFrenzy.com UFC rumors section.

I think Alves is in some trouble here. With the move down to 170 pounds; I think that Chonan is a legitimate threat to be a Top Ten Welterweight. Chonan is a good fighter and I look forward to seeing him in his UFC debut.

it all kind of sucks though. The UFC needs more fighters in the middleweight division. Soon people are going to get tired of seeing Franklin fight Silva…..unless Henderson moves down, thats what its gonna be.

You make a strong point there FixXer; the UFC Middleweight Division does need more fighters. After Paulo Filho gets a few more fights in the WEC; we will definatily see him in the UFC. I think when the UFC is extending Henderson’s contract; there will be a requirement for him to fight in the Middleweight division at least once. Other fighters that would be nice is Denis Kang and Robbie Lawler. I wouldn’t mind seeing Frank Trigg back in the UFC, either and he is now fighting at Middleweight.
