As if the backstory to UFC 194 wasn’t already compelling enough, thanks to what Frankie Edgar did last night at the TUF 22 Finale, things have gotten that much more interesting…
If you missed it, Edgar took out Chad Mendes in the opening round of their headliner on Friday night, as he dropped his fellow, featherweight contender with a couple of vicious hooks. Mendes wasn’t out cold, but chances are there wasn’t any coming back from the blows.
Due to the highlight reel win, Dana White confirmed after the bout that Edgar will get the next crack at the 145 title. We already knew the winner would likely get this, sure. But since Conor McGregor has stated publicly that he’s not really interested in fighting Mendes again, this makes McGregor -Edgar a real possibility (yes, if the interim champ can get by the champ Jose Aldo). It also means the UFC won’t have to go with Aldo-Mendes III, if the champ defends his belt tonight.
After the win, Edgar spoke with the UFC’s Megan Olivi, and discussed his victory, his title shot and yes, Aldo-McGregor. You can catch it below.
